- Jan. 22, 2014“Getting Back a Beautiful Syria” Foreign Minister Kishida Fumio attended the International Conference on Syria (the Geneva II Conference). Minister stated that Minister Kishida said he believes the ultimate goal of the conference to “get back a beautiful Syria” and appealed for an immediate cessation of violence. In addition to humanitarian assistance amounting to some 280 million U.S. dollars that has been extended to Syria, including aid to neighboring countries, Japan plans to provide additional assistance worth 120 million dollars in total, he said. He also pledged Japanese efforts to build confidence among parties that agree to the Geneva Communiqué in order to facilitate its implementation, including the establishment of a transitional governing body. - Jan. 22, 2014Japan EU Foreign Ministers’ MeetingForeign Minister Kishida Fumio held a meeting with Ms. Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission. Minister Kishida said that Japan and the EU closely collaborated on various issues including Iran’s nuclear program last year, and Japan continues to work closely with the EU to tackle international challenges. He also expressed his will to work on steady implementation of what both sides agreed at the last Japan-EU Summit, including cooperation for early conclusion of a Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA) and an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). - Jan. 21, 2014Headquarters for Japan's Economic Revitalization“The world demands further progress on structural reforms in Japan. In order to meet expectations at home and abroad for 'the sustainable growth of the Japanese economy even while the population shrinks,' we must carry out fundamental structural reforms,” said Prime Minister Abe Shinzo. - Jan. 17, 2014Japan as a Tourism-Oriented CountryThe number of annual international visitors to Japan reached 10 million people for the first time in history in 2013. “Japan has obtained the excellent opportunity of hosting the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Tokyo Games. Using this as a source of momentum, we will work to achieve the lofty target of 20 million international visitors by 2020,” said Prime Minister Abe Shinzo said at the meeting of the Ministerial Council on the Promotion of Japan as a Tourism-Oriented Country. - Jan. 17, 2014No revitalization of Japan without the reconstruction of the disaster area, Prime Minister Abe said at the meeting of the Reconstruction Promotion Council.“I have been visiting the areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake every month, adopting a hands-on approach. Through my visits, I have seen firsthand that reconstruction has made steady strides, observing the smiles on the faces of families who have moved into public housing for disaster-stricken households as well as the vast stretches of green fields in areas where farming has resumed. […] At the same time, although it will soon be three years since the earthquake, more than 270,000 people are still spending this winter at their evacuation locations.”
- Jan. 17, 2014National Traffic Safety Campaign“The Government will do its utmost to realize one of the safest road traffic conditions in the world,” Prime Minister Abe Shinzo said at the Central Meeting of the National Traffic Safety Campaign, The number of traffic accident fatalities last year decreased to 4,373, staying at the 4,000 range for the fifth consecutive year and decreasing for the 13th consecutive year.
