- Aug. 30, 2013The United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security, which was established by an initiative of the Government of Japan in 1999, decided to extend assistance of approximately 3,300 U.S. dollars to a project entitled “Support to Human Security in Northern Katanga through Early Recovery and Capacity Building of Local Territory of Nyunzu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.”
- Aug. 30, 2013Prime Minister Abe Shinzo met again with Prime Minister Khalifa bin Salman Al-Khalifa of the Kingdom of Bahrain. The leaders expressed their satisfaction with the development of bilateral relations and reiterated their commitment to further enhancing cooperation in all mutually beneficial areas, with particular focus on the development of their strong economic partnership. - Aug. 28, 2013Foreign Minister Kishida Fumio received a courtesy call from the UN Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Human Rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). COI Chairman Michael Kirby said the Commission would conduct detailed inquiries concerning the human rights situation in DPRK, which, he hopes, would contribute to the appropriate resolution of human rights issues in North Korea, including the abduction issue. PM Abe expressed his high appreciation for the leadership of the U.S. Congress in maintaining maritime security for the Asia Pacific region and engaged in a frank exchange of views with Senator McCain on issues including relations with China, North Korea and Republic of Korea. - Aug. 21, 2013Minister for Foreign Affairs Kishida Fumio held a telephone conversation with Egypt’s Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmi. Foreign Minister Kishida encouraged Egypt’s interim government to quickly achieve stability, advance its road map properly, and return to the process of democratization.
- Aug. 19, 2013Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry Motegi Toshimitsu attended the first Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) ministerial meeting in Brunei. The RCEP is an initiative to link the ten ASEAN member states and the group’s six Free Trade Agreement partners, Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand. If negotiated successfully, the RCEP would create the world’s largest trading bloc. In the first ministerial meeting, participants discussed the way forward for future negotiations.
