- Aug. 28, 2013Foreign Minister Kishida Fumio received a courtesy call from the UN Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Human Rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). COI Chairman Michael Kirby said the Commission would conduct detailed inquiries concerning the human rights situation in DPRK, which, he hopes, would contribute to the appropriate resolution of human rights issues in North Korea, including the abduction issue. Foreign Minister Kishida encouraged Egypt’s interim government to quickly achieve stability, advance its road map properly, and return to the process of democratization.
- Aug. 19, 2013Minister for Economy, Trade and Industry Motegi Toshimitsu attended the first Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) ministerial meeting in Brunei. The RCEP is an initiative to link the ten ASEAN member states and the group’s six Free Trade Agreement partners, Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand. If negotiated successfully, the RCEP would create the world’s largest trading bloc. In the first ministerial meeting, participants discussed the way forward for future negotiations.

- Aug. 15, 2013Prime Minister Abe Shinzo offered prayers at Chidorigafuchi National Cemetery and attended the annual Memorial Ceremony for the War Dead. PM Abe said in his address, “We will carve out the future of this country as one full of hope, as we face history with humility and engrave deeply into our hearts the lessons that we should learn. We will make contributions to lasting world peace… and spare no effort in working to bring about a world in which all people are able to live enriched lives.”
